How a Downtown Lockport Brewery Became a Neighborhood Haven
In the heart of downtown Lockport, Illinois, something special is brewing. Not just beer—though there’s plenty of that—but a sense of community that’s as carefully crafted as the flagship IPA on tap. Nik & Ivy Brewing Co. isn’t trying to be the flashiest brewery or chase the latest trend. Instead, it’s carved out its own niche as a neighborhood gathering spot where you can catch the game, bring the kids, and always find something new to try.
At the helm of the brewing operation is Chad Lindahl, the head brewmaster who’s been with Nik & Ivy since the very beginning. His journey with the brewery mirrors the revitalization of downtown Lockport itself—a story of growth, evolution, and coming full circle.
A Leap of Faith: The Origin Story
Chad’s path to becoming Nik & Ivy’s brewmaster started with what he calls a simple resume: a couple of homebrewed beers. It was early 2020 when Paul and Chrissy, the brewery’s owners, found themselves in an unusual position. They wanted to open a brewery but had no background in brewing. Through mutual friends, they connected with Chad, who brewed them a few beers that would essentially serve as his job application.
“They put their faith in me to help them start up and I was their original startup brewer,” Chad recalls. It was a risk for everyone involved, but one that would pay off as the brewery found its footing in the historic downtown district.
Like many stories in the craft beer world, Chad’s journey wasn’t a straight line. After helping establish Nik & Ivy, he ventured out to gain experience at other breweries. But the pull of what he’d helped build was strong. When the opportunity arose to return, he found himself back where it all started. “Just kind of the way it worked out,” he says with the casual modesty of someone who’s exactly where they’re meant to be.
Revitalization in Real Time
Nik & Ivy’s location in downtown Lockport isn’t just convenient—it’s integral to the brewery’s identity. The historic downtown district has undergone a remarkable transformation, and the brewery has had a front-row seat to the revival.
“When I first started there, there were a lot of empty buildings but things in the works,” Chad remembers. “It was really cool to see things coming to life and the downtown really revitalizing itself.” The area has worked hard to restore historic buildings, cultivate a restaurant scene, and create a destination worth visiting. Nik & Ivy sits right in the middle of it all, with fellow brewery Tangled Roots directly across the street, creating a craft beer corridor in the heart of town.
The brewery’s physical setup reflects this integration with the community. Unlike breweries tucked away in industrial parks, Nik & Ivy’s production happens right in the middle of the taproom. Patrons can sit at the bar with a fermenter right behind them, watching the brewing process unfold in real time. “The sample port kind of sticks out over the bar,” Chad notes. “It’s a tight space but we make it work.” This visibility isn’t just practical—it’s a statement about transparency and connection.
More Than Just Beer: A Sports Haven
When asked to describe Nik & Ivy in one sentence, Chad doesn’t lead with beer styles or brewing techniques. Instead, he highlights what makes the brewery unique in the craft beer landscape: “We’re one of the few more sport-centric breweries where we have quite a few TVs.” Owner Paul’s passion for sports has shaped the brewery’s atmosphere, creating a space where catching the game is as much a part of the experience as sampling the latest IPA.
This sports focus manifests in unexpected ways. When the Chicago Bears had their memorable playoff moment, Nik & Ivy was quick to commemorate it with a specially themed beer called “Good, Better, Best,” featuring a silhouette of the infamous throw. The timing was perfect, and the beer generated immediate excitement among regulars who appreciate both good craft beer and good football moments.
The brewery opens at 3 PM during the week, hitting that sweet spot when people are ready to unwind. “Late afternoon, evening—it gets pretty busy day to day,” Chad explains. The combination of sports, community atmosphere, and quality beer creates a draw that keeps regulars coming back and newcomers feeling welcome from their first visit.
Building Community, One Pint at a Time
What draws regulars to Nik & Ivy goes beyond the beer list or the game on TV. “It has that communal, neighborhood feel to it,” Chad observes. “It’s a very comfortable environment.” With a small team of bartenders, many of whom have been there for years, and Paul frequently present, the brewery has cultivated the kind of familiarity that turns first-time visitors into regulars.
The family-friendly nature of the space is intentional. With craft sodas available and games and toys for kids to play with, Nik & Ivy recognizes that beer lovers often come with families in tow. “All of us being parents as well, we get that kids come along to places,” Chad says. The brewery strikes a careful balance—welcoming families while maintaining an atmosphere that doesn’t feel overrun by children. It’s comfortable for everyone without catering exclusively to any single demographic.
Community involvement extends beyond the taproom walls. The brewery regularly partners with local schools for fundraisers, hosting events for PTAs and booster clubs. Sometimes they bring in guest bartenders; other times they donate tips. “It’s a fun night out for the parents, and we get to raise money for whatever their organization is,” Chad explains. These partnerships create genuine connections with the neighborhood, making Nik & Ivy more than just a place to grab a beer—it’s a community anchor.
The Brewing Philosophy: Approachable Excellence
Chad’s approach to brewing reflects the brewery’s overall ethos: make great beer that people actually want to drink. “We’re brewing beer to sell it,” he says with refreshing candor. “The goal is make something people want to drink and people like. It may not be the thing that I’m always going for, but it’s what our customers want, and that’s what we’re here to do.”
This customer-focused philosophy doesn’t mean compromising on quality. Instead, it means creating balanced, approachable beers that appeal to a wide range of palates. Chad takes particular pride in the brewery’s lagers, noting that he feels he’s producing “some good lager beers.” The current dark lager is his go-to recommendation, a beer that showcases technical skill while remaining highly drinkable.
The flagship Delwood IPA represents another pillar of the beer program. “I’m pretty proud of where that one’s at right now,” Chad says. For newcomers, he recommends starting with Delwood or one of the lagers—beers that showcase what Nik & Ivy does well without overwhelming the palate.
Limited space hasn’t prevented Chad from exploring more complex territory. The brewery produces barrel-aged stouts for their anniversary celebrations, complete with flavor variants. These special releases don’t last long, but they demonstrate a willingness to push boundaries while staying true to the core mission of making beer people love.
The Food Connection
While Nik & Ivy isn’t a restaurant, food is part of the experience. The brewery partners with Candlelight Pizza, a local company that provides frozen pizzas that are heated up on-site in a small pizza oven. “They’re actually really good,” Chad vouches, noting that the team gets to taste-test new varieties when they come in. It’s another example of the brewery’s commitment to supporting local businesses while providing what customers want—in this case, the classic beer-and-pizza pairing.
Lockport’s Craft Beer Renaissance
Nik & Ivy doesn’t exist in isolation. It’s part of a broader craft beer scene that’s making Lockport an unexpected destination for beer enthusiasts. With Tangled Roots across the street, Workforce Brewing about ten minutes away, and bottle shops in both Lockport and nearby Romeoville, the area has developed a critical mass of quality options.
“I think it’s a nice spot to be that does have a decent draw,” Chad observes. “Usually can surprise new people to the area, but when they come, they’re usually pleasantly surprised.” The proximity of multiple quality establishments creates a rising tide that lifts all boats—more options mean more reasons for people to visit the area, benefiting everyone.
The restaurant scene in Lockport has also embraced craft beer, with several establishments featuring strong beer programs. Combined with Joliet’s growing beer culture just a short drive away, the region is developing an identity as a craft beer destination worth exploring.
Always Something New
One of Nik & Ivy’s strengths is its commitment to variety. With relatively small batch sizes, the beer menu rotates frequently, giving regulars a reason to keep coming back. “We try to make it so that every time you come, there’s something new to try,” Chad explains. The upcoming Lake Life beer—a nod to summer’s approach—exemplifies this constant evolution.
Beyond beer, the brewery has embraced other elements that enhance the experience. Pinball machines have become a signature feature, with a company that swaps out machines regularly to keep things fresh. The machines feature scanners for leaderboards and other interactive elements, adding a playful dimension to the taproom. It’s a fitting detail for a brewery that’s never taken itself too seriously while taking its beer very seriously indeed.
What’s Next
Looking ahead, Nik & Ivy is focused on what it does best: creating great beer and fostering community. The team is working on building a stronger social media presence with more video content and behind-the-scenes glimpses of the brewing process. For those interested in following along, Instagram and Facebook provide regular updates on new beers, upcoming events, and what’s happening in the taproom.
When asked what final message he’d like to share with potential visitors, Chad’s response is characteristically straightforward: “Just come check us out. It’s a nice spot. It’s a really comfortable, cozy atmosphere.” Add in the pinball machines, the sports on TV, the beer being brewed right in front of you, and the welcoming neighborhood vibe, and you have a brewery that’s exactly what Lockport needed.
Full Circle
In an industry sometimes criticized for chasing trends or catering to beer geeks at the expense of casual drinkers, Nik & Ivy has found its lane: approachable, quality beer in a space that feels like your neighborhood bar, even if you’re visiting for the first time. It’s not trying to be everything to everyone. Instead, it’s being exactly what it needs to be for the community it serves.
As downtown Lockport continues to grow and evolve, Nik & Ivy Brewing stands as both a beneficiary and a contributor to that growth. With fermenters humming in the middle of the taproom, sports on the TVs, pinball machines chirping in the background, and Chad crafting the next batch of Delwood or dark lager, the brewery represents something essential: a place where people can gather, connect, and enjoy the simple pleasure of a well-made beer in good company. And really, isn’t that what the best breweries have always been about?
