Prairie Street Brewing Co. occupies one of the most storied addresses in Illinois brewing history. The building at 200 Prairie Street has held a brewery in one form or another since 1849, when English immigrant Jonathan Peacock founded Peacock Brewery on the banks of the Rock River. Over the following century the site weathered fires, a Prohibition-era conversion to a storage warehouse, and decades of dormancy before Loyd and Diane Koch began restoring the historic brewhouse in 1999. In 2013, Prairie Street Brewing Co. opened its doors inside the fully revived complex, putting beer back into pint glasses on the same ground where it had been brewed a century and a half earlier.
Walking into Prairie Street today feels like stepping into a working piece of 19th-century industrial architecture that just happens to also be a lively modern brewpub. Soaring brick walls, timber beams, and the arched ceiling of the old Barrel Room set the scene, while the riverside dock out back turns into one of downtown Rockford’s best warm-weather hangouts, especially during the brewery’s long-running Dinner on the Dock series and Dockside Live music nights.

The beer program leans into that range with an unusually deep lineup — Prairie Street keeps dozens of year-round, seasonal, and limited releases in rotation across sixteen taps, spanning crisp lagers, hop-forward IPAs, fruited sours, and barrel-aged stouts. The brewery has picked up recognition along the way, including a gold medal for its Wavey Blonde Ale at the Best of Craft Beer Awards and a silver medal for its Peach Wheat at the US Open Beer Championship. Sustainability is baked into the operation, too: the brewhouse runs on geothermal heating and cooling, and the facility has added solar panels and battery storage in partnership with the City of Rockford and ComEd.
Few Midwest breweries can claim a setting like this one: a National Register of Historic Places brewhouse, a private marina on the Rock River, and a beer list deep enough to reward repeat visits.
